A closer look at HSEi in action
HSEi brings innovative solutions to vulnerable communitiesThe Mpumalanga Oncology Initiative
HSEi partnered with Rob Ferreira Hospital to develop a Centre of Clinical Excellence in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province. The initiative built capacity to provide specialised clinical care for cancer patients in the region.
Then, HSEi partnered with South Africa’s Department of Health to bring high-quality radiology services to rural populations in the same province. The initiative successfully built radiology capacity within Rob Ferreira Hospital, Witbank Hospital, and Themba Hospital, enhancing the quality of imaging and diagnosis in this underserved region.
The Ethekwini
Oncology Initiative
HSEi worked with Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital and Addington Hospital to provide specialised clinical care to patients with cancer diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and palliation living in South Africa’s Ethekwini region. Working closely with management, nurses, clinical support staff, administrative staff, and oncologists in the local private health sector, HSEi stabilized—then eventually restored—clinics across the region, improving the lives of many patients in the area.
Decentralized Cancer Care Programme
Working in collaboration with the Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation (BMSF), he Decentralized Cancer Care Programme & Eastern Cape Collaborative Community Cancer Initiative trained community healthcare workers and NGOs on common cancer signs and symptoms, teaching them how to navigate the referral pathway and help patients reach a hospital for timely cancer
management and treatment. The project also hired dedicated patient navigators—community outreach experts that help clients navigate healthcare services and systems. By focusing on community outreach and training, HSEi and BMSF helped lower barriers to care. In addition to building the infrastructure and capacity needed to screen, diagnose, and treat cancer, the project made several other measurable impacts on the community.
